How To Get Free Stuff and Products from Companies

I wrote to 3M and look what I got, products worth €200! Read on to see how I did it and how you can too.

Did you know that you can get companies to send you free products and samples... just by asking? That's right, no surveys or gimmicks, just writing them an email or letter could get you some free stuff or coupons. Most people think that you have to participate in dodgy surveys or enrol for free stuff on even dodgier websites but with this, you just ask the company yourself. Or you may think that it is a little degrading to ask them for free stuff, but trust me, they have so many products to give away that they will be glad you did ask! Some companies may not reply at all and some might, it depends a little on luck, but you are bound to get something. Some things you could get are:
  • Samples
  • Perfume Samples
  • Makeup Samples
  • Coupons (for free products or 50% off)
  • Full size products
  • Discounts and vouchers
In this hub you will learn the in's and out's of getting free stuff, what companies you should write to, how to do it yourself, my story and Tom Lockes' story (he wrote to 100 companies which cost him $39, shows his results, what he got and more on his website. Enjoy!

How Did I do it?
I recently encountered the $39 dollar experiment which was conducted by Tom Locke. In this experiment, he wrote to 100 companies asking them for free products. It appears that you can be sent free products from a company by saying how much you enjoy using their products and you would like to express how much of a fan you are of their amazing creations. He received many items and products from a variety of companies, I was impressed. I wanted to try this out for myself.
So, I tried it out with a few companies, I wrote them a letter, I'll explain how exactly below and waited. One day, a huge package arrived in the post and I received so many products from one company. Some companies never wrote back to me or sent anything, I expected that. But, I realized that it isn't all that difficult to get some free products.
I will now explain how you can do it too.

1. Make A List Of Companies

The very first thing you have to do is to make a list of the companies you want to write to, you can write to one or two or you can write to four or five, the choice is yours. Look at items in your cupboard, bathroom and office, get the names of these companies. Here are a selection of companies that you can write to, but remember, these companies are not guaranteed to send you samples, you will have to see for yourself. If I have written to a company and received free products, I'll let you know.
  • Make Up, Perfume - Are you interested in makeup or perfume? Try writing to makeup companies for some samples such as: Clinique, Rimmel, Carma Labs (others have received products from Carma Labs, I don't live in America so I couldn't contact them), Chap Stick, Burts Bees, Lush etc.
  • Food - Kraft, Celestial Seasonings, Twinnings, Pepsi, Coca Cola, McDonalds, Wrigleys. You'll mainly get coupons but you could get a few samples too.
  • Office Supplies - 3M, Staedtler, Stabilo, Daler and Rowney, Pentel, Sharpie, Crayola.
  • Other: Colgate-Palmolive, Nestle, Apple (sent me stickers)

2. Get Addresses or Email

Once you have your list of companies you will need to get their contact details. You can do so by either looking at their website under the 'Contact Us' or 'About Us' links and making note of their address or email address or, by taking a look at the 'Contact Us' heading on your product. It may be quite difficult sometimes to find their address, if you don't, forget about that company and move on. Sometimes, you might not find their address but their email on their website. Write them an email instead of a letter. Gather up some addresses and get ready to start writing!
Should I Send a Letter or Email?
Usually letters suggest to the company that you value their products so much that you took the time to write them a letter. I have had more success writing a letter than an email. However, you will have to pay stamps and envelopes if you decide to write a letter, but you will have more success than an email.

Sample Address

Carma Labs:
Carma Laboratories, Inc.
Customer Service
5801 West Airways Avenue
Franklin, Wisconsin 53132
U.S.A.

3. Write Your Letter/Email

Once you have your company address, it is now time to write them a letter. Tell the company how much you value their products and their company, why they are the best company for making that product, what you love about their product, perhaps add a personal experience and then add that you would love to try more of their range and you would like to receive some samples. Here is a step by step overview:
  1. How Much You Love Their Company: Say why you like their products so much. For example; 'Your pens are so smooth to write with and are absolutely flawless, or your lotion is so soft and dissolves into my skin instantly!Make a good paragraph on this and maybe explain two to three of their products.
  2. Say that you have built trust in them: 'I always buy your brand because I like to be in the know that you will deliver only excellence every time.' or 'Your brand has always produced excellent bath products time and time again. I now always buy your brand as I know that you will deliver only the best every time.'
  3. Add a personal experience: 'When I wash my hair with your silky shampoo, all my family comment on how soft and luscious my hair is!'
  4. Say how much you would like to try more of their range: I have become such a loyal customer of yours and a fan of your company that I would love to try more of your range. Could you send me some samples of your products? Thank you, I would be so grateful!
When writing you letter keep the following points in mind:
  • Do not write to them just for receiving products, they will notice this and won't send you any. Be honest in what you tell them, you more than likely enjoy using their products so tell them that.
  • Say what your favourite products are and why.
  • Maybe give a personal experience (if you can)
  • Be concise and stick to the point. There is no need to go overboard.

Sample Letter 1

Here is a sample letter to a fictional organic shower gel company called "Organic Soaps". This company is fictional and any resemblance to any company is purely coincidental.
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to tell you how much I adore your shower and bath products. I believe that Organic Soaps are the creators of the finest shower and bath products in the world. Your shower gels remind me of nature. I feel in paradise when I use your shower gel. I particularly love your lavender and tea tree shower gel. It is so soothing to the skin and the lavender is so strong. I love the way you pack so much lavender flowers into the gel. It's natural and organic. Most shower gels nowadays are packed with harsh and synthetic chemicals but yours are completely natural. Well Done. As a feel-good enthusiast I always strive for excellence in shower and hair products and Organic Soaps do just that. I am such a fan of your company and I know that Organic Soaps always create the finest. I have recommended your products to my family and friends and they love your products just as much as I do. I would love to try more from your top class range. Could you please send me samples of your shower, bath and hair products to my address. I would be so grateful if you would send me some samples. Thank you.

Handy Phrases

Here are some handy phrases you can use to sprinkle here and there in your letters.
  • I believe that your company make the finest ... in the world.
  • I have built so much trust in your company as you deliver five star excellence every time.
  • Your brownies are absolutely delicious! They melt in my mouth and make me feel like I am in paradise.
  • Thank you for creating such amazing/life-changing products.
  • My dog is very choosey in what dog treats he will eat, but his mouth waters at your brand! He absolutely loves them!
  • Your ... are so well-designed and are made so intricately.
  • I love the way your ... are 100% organic and natural. Most ... are synthetic these days but yours will always be homemade and eco-friendly, that is what I like so much about your company.
  • I use your ... all the time, in the home, in the office.
  • I have recommended your products to all my friends and they love your ...! We have become ...(name of company) No.1 fans!
  • You have changed the world with your fantastic ...
  • I would love to try more of your amazing range. Could you please send me some samples of your new products? I would be so grateful. Thanks!
As you can see, most of the phrases are very repetitive so you will get into the hang of things after a while.

Tapping Your Inner Freeloader

1. Free Music

01-musicMany companies offer free downloads ... no strings attached. Few people realize that Amazon has offered free MP3 downloads for a while. Even MTV offers a few select free downloads that are updated monthly. If you are just looking for a great online playlist that can be customized to your liking, try Pandora.com or last.fm. All of these options are 100% free and can bring you the tunes that you want without having to spend a dime!

2. Free Movies & TV

02-moviesThe Internet has made it possible to easily (and legally) download full length programs and movies free of charge. So instead of paying high rental fees, or ridiculous cable television subscriptions, watch online at sites like Hulu.com, where you can legally watch hundreds of network television programs and full length movies.
The majority of cable stations offer full episodes of their main shows. These do feature commercials, but don’t feature any cable bills. A few cable stations that offer full episodes of their original programming:

3. Getting Free Hookups from Your Friends

03-friendsIf you think about your friends, you probably have a few that work at jobs that provide them with some really great perks. Usually they are more than happy to share these perks, especially if you can reciprocate.
Here are a few examples:
  • Radio Industry: Know anyone that works at a local radio station or college station? Many artists give out promotional copies of albums before the full album is released. Stations usually give them away. Many of the copies have special remixes and other tracks that might not be on the full album.
  • Bouncers: Bouncers are often given a great deal of discretion on who they charge covers, and are usually more than happy to let their friends in for free.
  • Clothing Retail: Friends who work in retail clothing get a sizeable employee discount. Most stores have a special “Friends and Family” discount that can save you some dough.
  • Auto Industry: Having a friend who can demystify buying or repairing a car can easily save you thousands of dollars. With a friend in the biz, you can be sure you aren't being scammed.

4. Free Live Entertainment

04-jambaseThere are often many opportunities for great live local entertainment that is free or extremely cheap. Check out Jambase.com for local musical acts in your area. Local theater is also an excellent opportunity for free or cheap entertainment. Community theaters often put on well-known plays, with very talented actors and actresses, so give them your support and have a great time in the process.

5. Free Prizes From Contests

05-contestDid you know that you can use the power of the Internet to find contests that you can actually win? Try searching for "contest" using Google's Blog Search . Local college radio stations, company blogs and individual bloggers use contests for publicity, often times only a handful people enter these contests. Give it a shot, you will find a huge variety of prizes being offered. From free concert tickets, to iPods, to flat screen TVs.

6. Free Education

06-educationMany colleges and universities now offer their classes online, some going as far as making them freely available to the general public. While you can't earn a degree by taking these online classes, you can learn a great deal on a wide variety of topics, and maybe make yourself more marketable to employers. Here's a quick list:

7. Get Paid By the Casino

07-casinoMost casinos use incentives in the form of "free plays" or vouchers of varying amounts ($20-$100) to acquire new member players. If you can avoid the temptation of gambling, you can usually cash out these incentives and go home with some free money. Once you're a casino member, be sure to keep your eye out for future monetary incentives in the mail.

8. Free Boxes and Shipping Supplies

08-boxesThe United States Postal Service and other shipping companies will provide you with shipping material... for free. Just please be respectful and don’t create an entire FedEx furniture collection like computer programmer Jose Avila did when he created a couch, dining room table and a desk out of FedEx cartons. So if you do a lot of mailing, sell anything on eBay, or just need a few boxes USPS, FedEx and UPS offer complimentary shipping material.

9. Free Samples Galore

09-samplesCompanies are eager to send out sample products or coupons to consumers in a position to publicize their products or services. If you have a blog or own a website, write to the companies whose products you enjoy and ask for samples in exchange for a review of their products. It's a win-win situation. You get free stuff, and they get a little bit of publicity. It's part of what they do to maintain good customer relations. Don’t have a blog? Write in directly to the company and express your opinions on the company's products … many times you could receive freebies for your valuable feedback.
If you love reviewing products, Amazon offers a “Vine” program that allows the best reviewers to receive free merchandise in return for an honest unbiased review. Currently it is “invite-only,” but many reviewers have been accepted after reviewing less than 30 products. So post a thoughtful review of current items you own for your chance to score brand new items for free from Amazon!

10. One Man's Trash Is Another Man's Treasure

10-treasure-1There are several great services that eco-minded citizens use to recover products before they are hauled off. Freecycle.org is an online community of more than 6 million members that are giving and getting free stuff in their home towns. Similarly, the "free stuff" section of craigslist offers all kinds of free items including televisions, clothes, furniture, and excess building materials. Just go to yourcity.craigslist.org/zip.

11. Miscellaneous Freebies

11-free-1Other sites aggregate free stuff on a daily basis like new product offers and product samples. Some of the bigger “free stuff sites” are:
www.totallyfreestuff.com
www.shop4freebies.com
So head on over to grab your share of freebies!

Tips on saving money

How to spend less money

The best way to ensure that you spend less money and save more money is to learn how to pay yourself first. This strategy might be considered an old personal finance rule, but it's also one of the most effective.

6 money saving tips

1. Make your own soap
Washing your hands with foaming soap is an expensive indulgence. Luckily, you can make your own, says Tovah Paglaro, the queen of green for the David Suzuki Foundation. "Those are crazy easy to make," she says. All you do is mix an eighth of pure castile soap with a bit of water, then put it in a foaming bottle, Paglaro explains. To make scented soap, add a drop of essential oil. Voila, you have your own version of luscious lavender soap.
Savings: $6 per month

2. Barter your skills
Invitations, a piñata and a well-decorated, tasty cake are necessary for any good party. But they're pricey to buy. Lisa Pedersen, of the website Fab Frugal Mama, suggests swapping skills with friends to save on party expenses. Pedersen used her design skills to create invitations for a friend. In return, the friend created a Barbie-themed cake for Pedersen's daughter's birthday. "Not only does it save money, it saves time, because you're breaking up the number of tasks you have to do for that party," she says.

3. Make banking a service
"You need to start thinking of the bank as providing you a service," says Jeffrey Schwartz, the executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada. "When you go into a restaurant, you order what you want," he says, so the same theory applies to banking fees—you should only pay for what you want. He advises looking at what services you pay for at the bank—overdraft protection, paper statements, etc.—and cut the services you don't use.
Savings: $2 to $15 per month

4. Stop freezing away money
It's easy to forget what's in your freezer. Then, one day, you find three packs of chicken in there, completely freezer burnt. Stephanie Holmes-Winton, CEO of The Money Finder, advises you keep a freezer log. The log shows you what food you have, reminding you to eat it before it goes bad. "What I've found is that saves you a ton of money in a year on meat because you're never wasting any of it. The same with goes with bread," she says.
Savings: $40 per month

5. Plan for the future
When there are major sales at the mall, it's hard to resist splurging on new clothes. And you can splurge, just do it on your child's wardrobe for next year, says professional home economist Tracey Drabyk-Zirk. If your children have enough clothes for this season, buy them clothes in the size they'll need for next year at this time, she suggests. Plus this takes the pressure off for next year. "When the snow hits you've already got the pair of winter boots and you're not having to get to the store and pay full retail price," Drabyk-Zirk says.
Savings: 20 to 80 percent off the retail price

8. Cook from scratch and avoid mixes

Cake mix, muffin mix, hot chocolate mix, you name it! If it's pre-mixed, it's more expensive than if you made it from scratch. And mixes often contain unpronounceable ingredients. Keep your pantry stocked with baking essentials so you have everything you need to bake, whenever the mood strikes.

Use coupons on what you can!!

Coupons/Deals!!!!

Who doesn't love to save money? I love it, I'm planning on treating myself to a few trips this year so saving is a must. I belong to Smart Canucks and to Red Flag Deals, both of which I get coupons and discounts from. Did I mention free samples? I also love free samples, and free things in general.

Smart Canucks: This website is one of my favourites, I can see this weeks flyers(sometimes the papergirl doesn't give me them), I can get freebies, I can see deals from companies and I have access to a lot of coupons. I can go on a forum and I ask anything I can possibly think of and share a link to my blog.

Red Flag Deals: This website is just like Smart Canucks, but it's just as important. If  you ever want to rent a car and need a discount code? This is your site as well, you can get discount codes for a lot of things.

Save.ca: I get a lot of coupons here too, sometimes they have a lot of baby products and I don't have a baby so that doesn't always work for me.

Retailmenot.ca: I have gotten a few discount codes from this site too, one of which I used for Teavana. I received $5 off my online purchase. I spent over $50 so I also got free shipping here in Canada. There is also coupons codes for Bath and Body Works, Gap, Air Canada and Indigo. If you're looking to get away this winter, then they have a whole section full of travel discounts. They also have links to MLB.com, NHL.com, MLS.com, NFL.com and NASCAR.com.

Pgeveryday.ca: I love this site too for coupons, I get a lot of Gain coupons on this site and I LOVE Gain. This is a really good site for all things laundry and house cleaning.

Give these sites a try and see if you like them as much as I do, saving money is great but you just have to know where to look. Have a great day and enjoy saving money today.

Free stuff/ Free Samples

I really like Coco Butter Kiss scent, I got  this new scent free from BzzAgent, I love secret deodorant, it smells beautifully and keeps you fresh and clean. I recommend this product, everyone should try it.
I love how this clear gel dries super quickly, I don't have to worry about white on my shirts and then having to soak my shirts after because as everyone knows the white marks are one of the hardest things to come out when washing clothes. When it's clear, I don't have to come home and soak my shirts. which makes my nights less stressful. The only thing I did not really like, from my own opinion, when I applied the gel deodorant, it was a bit cold at first . But at the end, the results was pretty amazing, Thanks to BzzAgent for the opportunity of testing the Secret® Clear Gel !!

I got this amazing product from BzzAgent and I want to tell you about it. I really liked how easy this product is to use. It's not always easy to stand there and cirque du sole myself into such a position to get all my roots. I have dark roots  It's absolutely amazing, it's called root touch up 6G Light Golden Brown from Clairol Root Root Touch Up!! It covered my roots and it looks amazing. I've got so many compliments on it, it feels great to have people notice my hair and not for the greys in it. Clairol Nice ‘N Easy Root Touch-Up experience makes greys disappear in between full colourings. I absolutely love it and you should try it. In 10 minutes of letting the product sit on my hair it covered so well. I like how there are many colour options since I change the colour of my hair all the time. It comes in a lot of amazing colours as well, try one for yourself!! It also last for 3 week, i'm going on 2 weeks and sit still looks great.   Thanks to BzzAgent for the opportunity of testing the Clairol Root Touch-up!!

I have received these is the mail and I'm so excited. My nephews come over all the time and the youngest one has just started walking. Today I was babysitting the youngest nephew and I tested these out and they worked great. I absolutely love these products.

Does a wonderful job on handles with a two point attachment, shaped like a C or [, you know what I mean? It just doesnt work on small round knobs. I hope that helps someone. These work better than the Parents brand we've previously purchased. The brand wasn't important, just keeping the toddler out of certain cabinets, but these sliding locks slide easier, so the other elementary-aged child can easily open them.

I got this is the mail yesterday and so far I'm in love with these products. First I love Covergirl and I've always used it. However this is Covergirl plus Olay and and I've used it for 2 days now and I can already feel that my morning puffy eyes are gone. COVERGIRL Plus Olay FaceLift Effect Firming Foundation, the latest advance from COVERGIRL Plus Olay, combines the firming power of a night cream with the flawless coverage of makeup.
COVERGIRL Plus Olay FaceLift Effect Firming Foundation:
  • Firmer looking skin in just 2 weeks
  • Lightweight foundation for flawless coverage
  • With Olay FaceFirm complex
The Pros:
The texture is fantastic, very creamy and super blendable. You can easily get sheer coverage or build for medium to full coverage.
This is moisturizing and has a very soothing feel on the skin. It doesn't make my skin look dried out or wrinkly like some foundations do. It's a great foundation for winter when my skin tends to have dry flaky areas.
I can apply this with fingers and blend it in super-fast. I can also skip primer and other prep steps, so it saves time getting ready.
It makes my skin look radiant without looking oily as long as I don't over-moisturize underneath.
It works best without a primer... seems to have enough slip and wrinkle coverage in it to work as foundation and primer at once.
The color (I got the lightest) works perfectly for my light olive skin and it doesn't oxidize.
My boyfriend  says my skin looks better than ever - clear and much younger - with this foundation. Hooray!

The Cons:
If I use it over primer, it's too heavy and results in oil buildup by midday and irritated skin by end of the day.
There is some color transference since this is not specifically a "long wearing" foundation, but I noticed that problem mostly happens when I use heavier products underneath it.
The packaging is a little jar, which can be a bit messy. I would prefer a pump bottle, but the jar is not a deal breaker in my case.

Overall, I will continue to use this and plan to buy it again.

I just got this in the mail today, a free sample!! I would like to start losing Weight so, this will help start me. I've also started working out daily as well, I'm so excited to try this free sample of Atkins. I've heard so many things about Atkins, some good and some bad so I will definitely let you know how these taste. The sample comes with 3 bars, a carb counter, a welcome message and a new step by step guide. These will help me track what I eat and just how many calories are it what I eat.

Pros

The Atkins diet offers significant benefits to many dieters.

  • Many men prefer this diet thanks to hearty foods like steaks and burgers being regular menu items.
  • Eliminates "bad" carbs (refined carbohydrates) such as baked goods like cake and white bread.
  • You are able to find your "ideal" carbohydrate intake level while following this plan.
  • Many people have lost a lot of weight on this plan. Several Atkins dieters I know have lost as much as 80 pounds.
  • Some Atkins dieters see improvements in cholesterol levels (despite the diet's high fat content).

Cons

Many medical experts express health concerns about the Atkins diet, as well.
  • The diet is high in saturated fat, which contributes to heart disease, heart attack, and stroke.
  • The diet is also high in protein, which may cause kidney problems.
  • For many, the restrictive nature of the diet makes it difficult to follow because they cannot eat any of the carbohydrate containing foods they enjoy.
